Autism Film Club returns on Wednesday 28 August with a one-off screening of The United States of Autism, an American documentary that follows one man’s 11,000 mile journey across the US to visit 20 families affected by autism while searching for answers for his own son.
With interviews from around the nation that include the widest spectrum of backgrounds - each conducted in the participants' original language - the film weaves a broad and compelling tapestry across the spectrum of American life in all its faiths, disparities, colours, and cultures.
The United States of Autism is an independent film created by the Tommy Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded in 2005 by parents of a child on the autism spectrum. It is an emerging voice for the autism movement receiving numerous awards including the Lancaster Red Rose award.

Q&A with Director, Richard Everts
How did you come up with the idea for the film?
My wife actually came up with the idea of talking with individuals around the country because of the great divide we saw among the autism movement. I worked in Digital Media for almost 20 years at that point, so I thought it might be better to turn it into a film.
Why has it taken so long to get this film out?
Unfortunately, I have to work full time outside of autism, so this film was done outside of my rather demanding schedule. Plus, people underestimate what goes into a film, especially one with such a small budget as ours. I would say, conservatively, at the end of the process I had put in over 4000 hours of work into the film just on my own. There were over 20 versions to get the best story, focus groups, learning new processes, and more. I owed it to the families to give them the best product possible.
What has been the greatest experience of the film for you?
I loved seeing the families and everything they brought to the table. It seems everyone concentrates on our differences… but there’s so much more that is the same in most of our lives.
What was it like traveling 11,000 miles of America in a mini-van for 40 days?
It was an experience of a lifetime. The beautiful sunsets, the wonderful places, the great crew. America is a beautiful and wide-open place and every American owes it to themselves to see what our country really is like at least once in their lives.
Why do you have people who talk about vaccines in your film? Hasn’t that been debunked?
I’m not concerned with the truth as much as what it perceived to be the truth, which matters more to people in their daily lives. How can one talk about the current autism movement and not discuss the one topic with the most media coverage? I’m not yet convinced this story is over.
What do you hope to accomplish with the film?
At the end of the day, I hope people in the autism movement being to coalesce like the AIDS movement did in the 90s. To do so, we have to start understanding what makes us similar, and respect the differences as reasonable people. If we can help shape the minds of influencers out there, I think we will have accomplished something great. Ultimately, it will be a test of introducing all of our movement’s strengths and weaknesses to the world and hope people begin to truly understand.
