Watch the new production of Poliuto
You will be able to watch the brand new production of Donizetti's Poliuto live via the Telegraph website from Sunday August 16 at 5pm for a week. This production marks the opera's UK premiere. Although a major influence on later composers (notably Verdi), the original production caused controversy in its depiction of the martyrdom of a Christian saint and Ferdinand II, king of the two Sicilies, forbade the production. Here, the American tenor Michael Fabiano takes the title role.
The live stream of Poliuto will follow two more LIVE broadcasts from Glyndebourne's 2015 season
    July 19
Die Entfhrung aus dem serail by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be streamed live on Sunday, July 19 and available on demand for one week
    August 9
The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten will be streamed live on Sunday, August 9 and available on demand for one week following

L'Heure Espagnole and L'Enfant et les sortilges
The Telegraph's opera critic Rupert Christiansen says:
Although there is a wealth of one-act operas in the repertory, only twice in history have two of them ever been twinned into a durable double bill. And if the raw passion and melodrama of Mascagnis Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallos Pagliacci make them quintessentially Italian, then Maurice Ravels LHeure Espagnole and LEnfant et les sortilges have an elegance and sophistication that are ineffably French.
Ironically, one reason the latter work so well as a pair is the difference between them. Written some 15 years apart, either side of the First World War, their delicately contrasting subject-matter sets each others qualities off, while allowing the composer golden opportunities to display his characteristic gifts for orchestral colour and subtle harmony. Both pieces are masterly miniatures: what a pity that Ravel never wrote anything full-scale for the opera house.
The world's most glamorous opera stars
LHeure espagnole (The Spanish Hour) is the piquantly farcical tale of a Spanish clockmakers wife negotiating a complicated extra-marital love life in her husbands brief absence; LEnfant et les sortilges (The Child and the Magic Spells), with a libretto by the romantic novelist Colette, is a knowingly contrived fairy-tale of a fractious and naughty boy who is taught a moral lesson by all the animals and objects he has maltreated - an adults view of childhood.
Both scores are sweetly and warmly flavoured, yet formally distinctive. LHeure espagnole is very much in the mould of the sung play, sprinkled with jokes evoking ticking and chiming clocks, but devoid of formal arias or big tunes. LEnfant et les sortilges, on the other hand, is a parade of short scenes, like a music-hall show, in which everyone steps forward to execute a catchy turn, crowned by a gloriously sentimental final chorus.
Glyndebournes delightful production, dating from 2012, has the inestimable advantage of a French director in Laurent Pelly and a largely Francophone cast who capture all the librettos Gallic nuances of emotion and mood. The conductor Kazushi Ono may be Japanese by birth, but he and our very own London Philharmonic Orchestra show that Ravels music has a graceful beauty that transcends all national boundaries. The result is two hours of pure operatic enchantment.
